The Hidden Reason Your Salon Isn’t Growing (It’s Not What You Think)
Mar 19, 2026How to Stay Creative as a Salon Owner (Even When Life Gets in the Way)
If you’re a salon owner feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or burnt out, you’re not alone. One of the biggest challenges in growing a salon business is learning how to stay creative while managing everything else.
Someone asked me not too long ago…
“Why don’t you write anymore? Didn’t you love that?”
And the answer is yes.
It’s actually one of my favorite things to do.
I love waking up early, before the world gets loud…
Sitting in silence…
And allowing my thoughts to hit the paper.
But somewhere along the way… I stopped.
When Salon Owner Burnout Takes Over Your Creativity
I allowed life to get the best of me.
And the crazy part?
I’ve spent years teaching salon leadership and coaching others not to let circumstances overpower their gifts.
Yet here I was… doing exactly that.
As salon owners, we are constantly pulled in different directions:
- managing clients
- handling finances
- leading a team
- trying to grow the business
This is where salon owner burnout begins.
We get stuck working in the business instead of on the business and creativity is the first thing to go.
Busy Doesn’t Mean You’re Growing Your Salon
There are so many days I get caught up doing things that need to get done…
…but are not actually helping me grow my salon business.
Instead of:
- creating content to attract new clients
- sharing haircutting education
- developing leadership for my team
I find myself:
- doing bills
- budgeting
- handling tasks that don’t require my highest value
Yes, these things matter.
But they are not what drives salon business growth strategies.
Time Management for Salon Owners Starts with Energy
Here’s what I realized:
I write best in the morning.
That’s when my mind is clear.
That’s when I’m creative.
That’s when I can truly show up as a leader.
And yet… I was giving that time away to tasks that don’t require that level of energy.
👉 Paying bills doesn’t require creativity
👉 But building your brand does
This is where time management for salon owners becomes critical.
It’s not just about managing time—
it’s about managing your energy and priorities.
Why Creativity Is the Key to Growing a Salon Business
As a salon owner, your creativity is not optional; it’s essential.
Your creativity is what:
- attracts new clients
- builds your brand
- develops your team
- positions you as a leader in the industry
This is how you build a successful salon business.
When you stop creating, you stop growing.
Unused Gifts Lead to Stress and Lack of Purpose
Let me ask you something…
Do you ever think about the gifts you’ve developed—
the things you’re truly great at—but aren’t using?
This is one of the most stressful places to live.
When you’re not using your gifts:
- You question your purpose
- You feel disconnected
- You lose clarity in your role as a leader
And deep down, you know…
You could be helping people.
You could be making a bigger impact.
This is where true leadership for hairstylists begins
by using your gifts to serve others.
You Can’t Grow Your Salon If You Stay Hidden
If your gift stays inside you…
Who does it serve?
No one.
Your knowledge, your experience, your skills
are meant to be shared.
Just like a plant in good soil:
- It takes root
- It grows
- It gives back
This is the same process in building a salon brand.
You must plant the seed.
What I Changed (And What Salon Owners Need to Do)
This morning, I woke up to do budgeting.
But I stopped myself.
I made a decision:
👉 I will not start my day with tasks
👉 I will start my day by creating
Because I know once I get pulled into the day-to-day,
My creativity disappears.
This is one of the most important salon leadership tips I can give you:
Create first. Manage later.
A Challenge for Every Salon Owner
I want you to think about this:
👉 What is one gift you have that you’re not using?
👉 How could it help someone else?
👉 What are you prioritizing instead?
And most importantly:
- What would your life look like if you started using it?
Would your business grow?
Would your team improve?
Would your clients benefit?
If the answer is yes…
Then it’s time to act.
